🔴 MOSQUITO LAMP. How does it WORK? Is it DANGEROUS? Make your own?

Hi. Have you ever wondered if an electric mosquito lamp can hurt you? Do you want to make your own? I will disassemble a small power socket unit I bought from China for 1.5€. Let I spare your time, for your home it is not worth making your own. Buying separate elements is more expensive.

I designed this video in 2 sections. In first part I will disassemble the product. In the second part I will show you the scheme and run a circuit simulation, so you can see how it works and what voltages it produces. It is a simple part, no nerd things.

Well, let’s open it. As you can see it’s a very simple circuit. There are few capacitors, diodes and some resistors. Let’s see the scheme.

As you can see there are two voltage doublers. The picture on the side shows one of them. It consists of two diodes and two capacitors. One half wave voltage doubler for the positive half of sinusoidal wave and another for negative half. In the middle is the mosquito killing mesh. Check voltage doublers and Cockcroft Walton generator online. Let’s not complicate and see the simulation.

The blue line shows us our input AC voltage. This demo has a 220V AC although we have 230V AC in Slovenia.

The green and the yellow lines represent voltages of the middle of each voltage doubler. So they show us both peak voltages of our AC voltage.
Next stop is the red line. It represents the output of negative half wave voltage multiplier on the right. On the left, with blue color, we have output of the positive half doubler. So let’s end the simulation and see what we have in-between the blue and red lines. Around 900V on the mosquito killing end.

Beware of AC voltage. It may kill you. This socket lamp is effective and cheap. There is no UV light, just blue leds. It is not worth making your own.

Touching the mosquito mesh on this unit is hurtful, but should not be lethal due to low current. The mosquito killer mesh has around 900V.
